Wind Damage

During a wind storm, homes may be damaged by high winds and wind-driven rains. Often, trees and limbs will penetrate roofs and damage trusses and insulation. Debris can break windows and allow wind and rain entrance to the home. In extreme storms, the force of the wind alone can cause weak places in the home to fall.

DO...

  • make trees more wind resistant by removing diseased and damaged limbs.
  • inspect your home for damage.
  • use flashlights in the dark; DO NOT use candles.

DO NOT...

  • attempt to remove trees or debris from the roof without the use of proper equipment or safety measures.

Break/Enter/Vandalism

Break and Enter incidents are far too common, and a major problem faced by the police is determining ownership of recovered property.

Vandalism and graffiti is most often caused by minors in the late-night or early morning hours. The vast majority of the increase in graffiti vandalism is the result of "tagging", committed by juveniles with the primary objective being peer recognition. Taggers are not necessarily gang members, and come from all neighborhoods of the city.

DO...

  • know your neighbourhood and look out for one another.
  • let your neighbour know when you are away.
  • have someone pick up your mail and newspapers.
  • install improved lighting and consider the use of timing and motion sensitive lights.
  • permanently and visibly mark property, both as a deterrent and proof of ownership.
  • record the serial numbers of your valuables where possible.
  • get a good description of the suspect(s) and vehicle(s) involved.
  • take photos of graffiti vandalism for future prosecution.
  • use graffiti remover on glass, unpainted metal surfaces, or brick and block walls.

DO NOT...

  • leave keys in a visible spot. With the popular use of anti-theft devices, homes are being broken into and car keys taken.
  • touch "acid-etching" graffiti. Etch cream can cause penetrating burns to skin, eyes and lungs. Chemical burns may be felt for hours after contact and the burns are very deep in the tissue. Anyone coming in contact with the chemicals should seek immediate medical attention
